What's in the Barn!? - Sheriff Grace corrals the Professor

Excerpt from the feature length screenplay: What's in the Barn!? by Brad Havens

INT. SHERIFF’S OFFICE - SAME 

Grace and the Professor are frozen, listening to the GUNSHOTS and DEPUTY CHAN SCREAMING.

Grace flies to the dispatch station and gets on the mic. 


                                                            GRACE 

                    Chet! Chet! It’s Grace! Can you hear me? 


A few GAGGING NOISES come through in response. 


                                                            GRACE (CONT’D) 

                    Deputy Chan, this is Sheriff Grace McCallister! Respond to this station at once, 

                    Officer Chan. 


Silence. 

Grace pulls herself together. The Professor has been watching everything from the counter. 


                                                            PROFESSOR 

                    You see? This is what I am trying to tell you! This is big! Big! A threat to us all, 

                    big! 


Grace looks over to the Professor and makes a quick decision. 


                                                            GRACE 

                    Yes, I see what you’re saying. Would you come in here, please? She buzzes the 

                    side door for him, and he moves to enter the main office area. 

                                                            PROFESSOR 

                    Oh, thank you, finally, for listening to reason! Poor Eugene was just the beginning! 


She meets him and quides him back through another door as he speaks. 


                                                            GRACE 

                    This way, please... 

                                                            PROFESSOR 

                    This is spreading! Poor Deputy Chan! I- I - I mean, we have to come up with a 

                    plan! 

                                                            GRACE 

                    Yes, we do. If you wouldn’t mind, please, Professor? 


She smiles at him, making the “after you” gesture towards an open door in this short hallway. The Professor glances at it and steps inside indifferently. 


                                                            PROFESSOR 

                    You see, it seems to - wait, whywhat’s going on here? 


The Professor turns back to see Grace closing a cell door on him. It locks into place automatically. He stares at her dumbfounded. 


                                                            GRACE 

                    Professor, I am placing you under arrest for tranquilizing, imprisoning, and 

                    subsequently abandoning a Federal Employee who sounds like he needs 

                    medical attention. 

                                                            PROFESSOR 

                    You can’t be serious! 

                                                            GRACE 

                    And I have no other choice but to detain you while I see to Deputy Chan. 

                                                            PROFESSOR 

                    How dare you! This is - this - 

                                                            GRACE 

                    I am sorry for the unfortunate turn of events. There is a sink and a toilet. 

                    Both work now. And some magazines. Please do not commit suicide in 

                    my absence. 


The Professor is furious beyond the ability to speak. She turns and leaves, heading straight for her squad car.

POLICE STATION - INTERVIEW ROOM #2 - SAME  The Girl sits comfortably as she can in the stiff chair, staring off, randomly skimming her gaze across the room. She seems almost relaxed in her composure. She becomes more attentive, looking to the mirror at one side of the room. Taking a deep breath, she turns her head slowly from the mirror to the door.  The door opens and Joe steps halfway in. He freezes. They stare for a long moment, eyes riveted to each other.  Joe recovers himself and steps all the way into the room, letting the door close behind him. He moves cautiously, bringing the cup of water to her, leaving it on the table within her reach. The stare at each other.  Joe remembers the chair and sits down to face her.
